073: 2013 Gift Guide – Pt. 1

Well hello there fine chaps! It seems it is that fine time of year again when we all start gearing up for the holidays. The parties are planned and scheduled, good times are shared, and goodfaith compromises are made on how much weight gain is acceptable between Thanksgiving and Jan 2nd. For most people it’s also a time of exchanging gifts, and in case any of you are looking for a little inspiration we’re here to prep you before you find yourself wandering the mall on Dec 17th in a spiked-eggnog fueled daze with no idea what to get anyone except your self. Also, don’t forget my birthday falls conveniently halfway between now and the old 25th of December so anything you want to pop in the mail is up to you. Follow the jump to see what’s in store.

If you’re anything like me, you hate how much time sleeping takes up. Think of all that other stuff we could get done! I mean, think of all the extra reading and writing I could finally accomplish. Heck, I might even start updating this blog more regularly.

  • To start off here’s an interesting look at the preferred writing tools of 20 famous authors. Call me predictable, but I liked Hemingway’s the best.
  • Another great author sadly omitted from that last is Salinger. In this piece from the fine folks at WELL SPENT they look not only at the author but his rather impeccable style as well.
  • And what is a great author without books? Every man should have a library whether it’s a mindless spiral of odds and ends collected over time and spilling off bookshelves into piles along the molding or a carefully curated collection of only your favorites, here a few good lists to help you get started.
  • Last but not least, there are many words that simply have no English equivalent. Here is a fun look 10 of those words coupled with a nice little illustration to go with them. Komorebi is definitely my favorite. Feel free to leave a comment and share which is your favorite.

Because honestly, we all need a few extra reasons to drink more whiskey.

If you’re not caught up on Breaking Bad don’t watch this. Otherwise: hilarious.

  • I’m from the Gunshine State (Florida) home of the weird and land of the 365 BBQ, but this man takes the cake.
  • And if you’re going to be doing some extreme grilling, why not put a personal touch on it with a customizable brand?
  • Finally, if you’re going to all that trouble you might as well invite a few friends over. Make sure you do it right.
  • Tired of BBQ talk? Need something more serious for your world weary head? Check out this (kinda) longread from Gear Patrol about the 10,000 Year Clock.

052: THE ROUNDUP

Well it’s another week. I guess that’s what it is? At least we have TWO, count’em TWO drinking holidays to look forward to this weekend. More on that later.

  • What do you get when you combine a Jewish Family, Suburban Ontario, and A Strip Club? The Manor, which looks to be an incredible documentary. Keep an eye out for it soon. Also, I’d rate that video as NSFW.
  • Love Basbeball? Love Food? Love both together? Check out the 15 Most Exciting New Baseball Stadium Snacks.
  • Not to be repetitious but: Love Baseball? Love Beer? Love both together? Check out The Summer Of Beer And Whiskey. It’s the story of one man’s quest to start a baseball team in St. Louis just to sell more beer. I haven’t read it yet, but it’s earned a high slot in my overflowing summer reading schedule.
  • Finally, as many of you may have heard Bill Gates in all his philanthropic wisdom recently offered $100,000 to anyone who could develop a better condom. It seems this has spurred a great debate about condom usage itself and The Atlantic has a great article on why so few men still do not use a condom.

051: THE ROUNDS

So in honor of one of the worst weeks in American History that I can remember, let’s make it a light lunch.

  • If you were a fan of Ultimate Dog Tease than you definitely need to take One and A Half minutes out of your day and watch Dog Wants Kitty [Video]
  • Speaking of Kittys: Places Where Cats Shouldn’t Be. I’m looking at you, Nancy.
  • Finally, I think we all know I love Chicago so here are some pretty sweet old maps of Chi-Town via the ubiquitous A Continuous Lean.
  • Also, at least semi-regular updating of HowManyBeards will resume immediately.

In more terrifying squid related news, a team of Japanese scientists have confirmed the existence of squid that fly up to 100 ft out of the water at speeds exceeding that of Usain Bolt’s fastest speed. So, flying carnivorous squid that you cannot outrun. Sweet dreams.
